Lobbying by BASC and other shooting organisations has delivered workable general licences for the trapping of stoats in England as they come into force today (1 April).

The new licences issued by Natural England are for conserving wild birds (GL38) and preventing serious damage (GL39). These licences will allow the humane trapping of stoats to continue in England.

Glynn Evans, BASC’s head of gamekeeping, said: “Action was taken following draft licences seen last week caused considerable concern. BASC appreciates the positive engagement of Defra and Natural England to help deliver a workable licence.”

“Whilst we still have concerns around certain details, steps have been taken in the right direction.

“Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales have taken different licensing routes and it is important for anyone who is acting under their authority to understand and comply with them fully.

“BASC has been fully engaged in the implementation process of this new legislation. We will continue to offer advice to our members and licensing bodies.”
