BASC has sent the government an 11-point guide on how deer stalking should resume once the UK starts lifting Coronavirus restrictions.
In a letter to Environment Secretary George Eustice, the UK’s largest shooting organisation has outlined the damage that is being done by deer in the absence of essential management and has identified steps that could be taken to ensure the work resumes in line with social distancing requirements.
In the letter, BASC highlights that the ability to control deer is essential for reducing their impact on the countryside, is a fantastic supply of meat and is a significant rural business.
Martin Edwards, head of deer management at BASC, said: “BASC is currently managing multiple avenues to ensure the countryside and the wider shooting industry does not suffer any more than what is absolutely necessary to tackle Coronavirus.
“The guidance prepared by BASC allows a clear route for all deer management to continue in a safe and secure manner for the benefit of our members.”
