Shooting group responds to NGDA statement

A group of leading shooting and rural organisations has released the following statement in response to the National Game Dealers Association (NGDA) announcing that it is committed to sourcing all feather and fur game from lead-free supply chains from 1 July 2022:
A spokesperson for BASC, Countryside Alliance (CA), British Game Alliance (BGA) and Game Farmers’ Association (GFA) said: “A strong game market and acceptance of game meat will mean a strong future for shooting. The continued use of lead shot has become a growing blocker for the game market. This was a key driver in the announcement by the shooting organisations last year of a five-year voluntary transition away from lead shot for live quarry.“The NGDA represents an influential portion of the overall game dealers sector and their statement provides significant direction and leadership.
“The shooting organisations continue to work towards a voluntary five-year transition but accept that changes within some areas of the sector may move quicker than in other areas.
“The shooting organisations will continue to work with all stakeholders to support the transition through education, promotion, research and development in sustainable ammunition.”

At the National Game Dealers Association (NGDA) annual general meeting members voted to commit to sourcing all feather and fur Game as well as venison and wild boar from lead free supply chains from the 1st of July 2022.
This was agreed in order to future proof the sale of Game meat in their customers businesses, and to ensure continued consumer growth from those people seeking to enjoy our healthy delicious game products. This is a positive move for our industry to protect the environment and further assure our products in a highly competitive marketplace. The NGDA and its members will be working with the relevant industry groups to ensure, with this notice, our supply chains are able to make a transition.
If you have any concerns as a supplier to an NGDA member, please discuss your individual requirements with them or the NGDA.

This announcement only affects those who are members of the NGDA at this time.

Although the industry is working towards a 5-year transition to move away from lead shot, huge pressure has been put on game dealers to supply non lead shot game to supermarkets. They have taken this decision to protect their market share.
Feathered Game
They will not be accepting lead shot game as from the 1st July 2022.
You can supply lead shot game this year although it is a good time to start the move over to non-lead shot game.
You should contact your game dealer to discuss their requirements for the coming seasons.
They will only be picking up lead free game as from 1st July 2022 you should contact your game dealers to discuss their requirements for the 2021 season.
The best way is to provide the non-lead cartridges for your guns.
You will have to discuss this with individual game dealers but those outside of the National Game Dealers Association have not stated they are not taking lead shot game. This is likely to change over time so please talk to your game dealer.
You are free to change game dealers, but you must make sure you have arrangements for your game before the season.
Fur Game
They will not be accepting lead shot game as from the 1st July 2022 although it should be noted that some game dealers have already announced they will not take lead shot deer from 1st August 2021.
You can supply lead shot game this year although it is a good time to start the move over to non-lead shot game. Please note that some game dealers have already stated they will not accept venison shot with lead from 1st August 2021 so please contact them to discuss their position.
You should contact your game dealer to discuss their requirements for the coming seasons.
Unfortunately, this will not be an excuse you may need to purchase a new gun. Talk to your gunsmith.
