A new website has been launched to allow everyone who shoots to show their commitment to uphold the laws on lead shot. Politicians are actively considering a ban on lead shot if compliance does not improve and they will be influenced by evidence and public opinion. The shooting world must demonstrate that the laws on lead shot are being followed.

The website forms part of a wider campaign supported by leading country sports organisations. It will collect electronic signatures from people willing to stand up and be counted. Four thousand signatures have been added in the first three days since the website went live.

Richard Ali, BASC chief executive, said: “Campaigns by groups who wish to see a total ban on lead shot will use any evidence of non-compliance to support their cause. The shooting world needs to demonstrate to politicians and others that the law will be upheld. Everyone who shoots should sign up and encourage their friends to do the same.”

The current law in England and Wales makes it illegal to use lead shot over all foreshore, specified Sites of Special Scientific Interest and for the shooting of all wildfowl wherever they occur. It has been in place in England since 1999 and in Wales since 2004. In Scotland and Northern Ireland it is illegal to use lead shot over wetlands.
