Advice for firearms certificate holders on protecting their firearms from theft has been published by the UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), the National Crime Agency (NCA) and the police.
The advice, Protect Your Firearm, Protect Your Sport, shares tips with certificate holders on storage and transportation and on keeping vigilant when out and about. It also shows the steps that can be taken to avoid being targeted via social media.
The advice has been produced as part of a national initiative to reduce the chances of theft of firearms from licence holders. It is available to download from the BASC website.
Alan Jarrett, BASC chairman, said: “BASC supports efforts to help lawful gun owners to maintain their excellent record of security. This initiative provides people with an easily accessible source of simple and concise information. Following this advice could help reduce the number of firearms ending up in the wrong hands.”
Roy McComb, Deputy Director of the NCA’s Organised Crime Command, said: “Although the level of theft of lawful firearms is very low, one firearm in the wrong hands is one too many. I’m delighted we’re working with BASC to ensure its members and the wider shooting community are given simple advice on security measures.”
