BASC is welcoming the publication today of a Welsh government committee report which says Natural Resources Wales (NRW) should open up woodlands for shooting.
The Climate Change, Environment and Rural Affairs Committee’s inquiry into forestry policy has recommended that NRW should increase the use of woodlands for shooting as a way of expanding recreational use and raising revenue.
Ian Danby, BASC’s head of biodiversity projects, said: “BASC provided evidence to this inquiry and is pleased with the committee’s considered view that NRW should be increasing woodland recreational opportunities for shooting.
“Shooting can generate income for landowners and also provides essential pest control for species like grey squirrel and helps manage deer numbers.”
Robin Marshall-Ball, a BASC council member and conservation specialist, said: “We expect notice to be taken of the committee’s report in future policy decisions.
“Welsh government currently has a consultation covering access to recreation and Natural Resources Wales is reviewing its policy on firearms use on land it owns and manages. The committee’s view should be heeded and recreational shooting should be encouraged.”
