Following Defra’s announcement that the Green Recovery Challenge Fund is being doubled as part of the Government ten point plan to kickstart the nation’s green recovery, BASC has made the following statement:
Dr Conor O’Gorman, BASC’s head of campaigns and policy, said: “It is heartening to see an £80 million investment in conservation jobs and a commitment to create more wildlife rich habitat through landscape recovery projects as part of the Prime Minister’s ten point plan for a green revolution.
“Conservation work by people that shoot is key to the Government’s green economic recovery. Every year shoots spend £250 million on conservation projects and the work carried out by gamekeepers and volunteers is equivalent to 16,000 full time employees. This is a staggering level of support for the environment and the new Environmental Land Management scheme promises to further increase shooting’s positive role in conservation.”
