BASC is advising members of a single incident of ‘low pathogen avian flu’ at a chicken farm in Suffolk
Defra has confirmed the case and a one-kilometre exclusion zone has been established, which bans the movements of birds within the zone unless under licence. No gatherings of poultry are allowed in the zone.
Public Health England has said the risk to human health is very low and the Food Standards Agency has said food safety is not at risk.
Glynn Evans, BASC’s head of game and gundogs, said: “This appears to be very much an isolated event and Defra is investigating the cause.
“We are in regular contact with Defra and will update our members if the situation changes. For now, our advice echoes that of Defra’s vets in so far as bird keepers should remain alert for any signs of disease, report suspected disease immediately and ensure they are maintaining good biosecurity.”
