Conservationists have recognised the vital role shooters play in managing wetlands at a special workshop held on World Wetlands Day.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has called for an urgent meeting with Defra to discuss proposals about sharing confidential information from the GB Poultry Register with other government departments.

The number of young people taking up shooting sports through the British Association for Shooting and Conservation’s Young Shots scheme has risen by 20 percent in the last year alone.

The qualifying rounds of the BASC gamekeepers’ national clay shoot will take place at locations across the UK in March.

Gamekeepers and shoot managers who lack the qualification to sell meat to game dealers can still attend an accredited BASC training course this year.

Natural England has taken over the responsibility for the administration of general licences for pest bird species from Defra. Licences remain much the same as in 2007 but two new licences have also been created.
