BASC is encouraging its members, who shoot along the coast in England, to find out more about Defra’s Coastal Change Policy as it could provide them with new shooting opportunities.
As part of the policy, Defra intends to engage coastal communities in the issues associated with climate change and rising sea levels. BASC believes that this is an ideal opportunity for wildfowlers and other shooters along the coast to get involved in negotiating new shooting opportunities and improving wildfowl habitats as the process of coastal change evolves.
BASC’s rural land development manager, Paul Williamson, said: “We believe that our members’ involvement will not only protect existing shooting and conservation areas but also enable them to negotiate new shooting opportunities as the process of coastal change evolves.”
BASC’s policy development manager, Conor O’Gorman, said: “BASC leads the way on protecting shooters rights on issues like coastal access and shooting consents, but the coastal shooting community needs to be more proactive in exploiting opportunities for shooting on the ground. If funding streams become available through Defra’s Coastal Change Policy BASC will highlight them and provide advice, but it is up to shooters at local level to capitalise on that.”
