Exeter University’s Joah Madden discussed the ecological impact of releasing gamebirds on Farming Today this morning (from 05.44mins).
In talking about his review on the topic, which was commissioned by BASC and Natural England, Joah discusses the landscape benefits of releasing game, such as habitat management and predator control, as well as the direct impacts on the release site.
The review concluded that releasing gamebirds can bring marked benefits when in conjunction with best practice. However, careful balance is required when the negatives outweigh the positives. Joah determined that releasing gamebirds needs to demonstrate positive actions through science otherwise it will become harder to justify.
BASC’s head of biodiversity Ian Danby said: “This is an important listen for members because it provides a balanced view of the impacts of gamebird release. The interview also mentioned that following The Code of Good Shooting Practice ensures a net gain for the environment from game shooting.
“BASC co-commissioned this research to get an up-to-date understanding of where gamebird release and associated management is negative and positive for the environment. We encourage all members to know and abide by the Code of Good Shooting Practice.”
