Earlier this month, nine Young Shots enjoyed their first driven game day in Hampshire. The shoot was hosted by Greenwood Shoot near Bishops Waltham and keeper Andy Cheeseman.
The day was an early start for most with 8am bacon butties. Afterwards, mentors introduced themselves to the Young Shots, followed by a shoot briefing to ensure everyone knew the plan for the day. The pegs were drawn, and everyone headed out for the first couple of drives.
The shoot was mainly woodland, so beaters and dogs worked extremely hard through some heavy cover to put birds up over the Guns. One really exciting factor was the number of woodcock seen – it was a real joy for all to watch them.
Excellent game sausage rolls, which disappeared very quickly, were served for elevenses. Afterwards, everyone headed back outside for the remaining drives. The day ended with a dinner of game meatballs and pasta at the shoot lodge.
It was an amazing day for all, not just the Young Shots shooting their first game birds but also for everyone involved. Seeing the next generation getting involved in and enjoying our sport is extremely rewarding.
So, once again, we want to say thank you to Andy and his team at the Greenwood Shoot, all the mentors, beaters and pickers up.
