While the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) is an all party organisation, the new government is supportive of shooting and conversation.
The new Prime Minister Liz Truss has always supported and recognised shooting’s contribution to conservation and the rural economy.
During her time as Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Liz spoke at BASC’s rural reception at the Conservative Party Conference and told us: “I can assure you that a Conservative-majority government will be fully supportive of shooting, of fishing, of angling – and we will make sure that any potential threats to those industries are very speedily rebutted.” We look forward to working with Liz and her team to protect the future of sustainable shooting.
We are also looking forward to working with the new secretary of state for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs; Ranil Jayawardena MP.
The Member of Parliament for North East Hampshire since 2015, this is Mr Jayawardena’s first cabinet position.
Christopher Graffius, BASC executive director of communications and public affairs, said: “With food security, the nature emergency and the rural economy at the top of the government’s agenda, it has never been more important to ensure shooting’s role in the countryside and the benefits it brings to the environment and economy are acknowledged at the highest level.
“BASC looks forward to working with Mr Jayawardena to ensure the department’s continued support for sustainable shooting and its wide reaching benefits across our country.”
