Novice gundog owners and people thinking of getting a puppy to train as a gundog are being invited to attend a training day in Cumbria.

The UK’s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), will host a basic gundog training day in Grizedale, near Hawkshead, on 18th June 2011.

The instructors on the day will be BASC’s Northern region gundog advisors.

The day will start with a short indoor session where instructors and participants will discuss subjects including acquiring a dog, housing, feeding, training equipment and the law relating to dogs.

Outdoor sessions will cover hands-on training starting from basics such as issuing sit and stay commands and walking to heel, before moving on to intermediate training including redirection and paying attention to a stop whistle.

BASC’s Northern regional director Phillip Pugh said: “The day is about training the owner to train a dog he or she will be proud of in the field.

"This is a hands-on day run by our own experienced gundog advisors who will ensure the training is specific to working dogs.”

The cost for the day is £40. Places are strictly limited to allow for plenty of one-to-one instruction so early booking is recommended.
