How to make a bee house

Bees are hugely important to our environment and let’s be honest, they are also pretty damn awesome!

Around 1/3 of the food that we eat is pollinated by bees including delicious fruits and vegetables. But it doesn’t stop there! Bees also pollinate foods eaten by other animals and birds, and are hugely beneficial to the economy through their honey produce.

Bees are great for the environment around us too! They enhance biodiversity by pollinating wild flowers and creating the colours captured across our landscape.

But...

The number of bees is declining, and they need all the help they can get. Help protect the bees and create a bee house for your garden in just a few easy steps.

What you will need

  • 1 x two litre plastic bottle
  • 2 x 40cm of 5mm rope
  • Corrugated card
  • Some old canes
  • Dried plant stalks
  • Small bits of wood with holes (10mm wide x 100mm deep) drilled into it

Instructions

1. Cut the bottle in half (approx. 15cm from end)
3. Thread the rope through the hole and leave enough spare to be able to fasten to a tree or shed
5. Cut the canes, plant stalks and wood to the length of the bottle
2. Cut a small hole in the closed end of the bottle (big enough to fit some thin rope through)
4. Cut a length of corrugated card to line the bottle
6. Arrange the canes, plant stalks and wood inside the bottle
