BASC Council elections candidates

National seat

John Furbisher

Region: West Yorkshire
Proposed by: D Holding
Seconded by: K Gosney

I am a former journalist and newspaper editor, now a political communications consultant. Outside work, I am an enthusiastic if inexpert Gun, having discovered the joy and fellowship of field sports in middle age.

I enjoy a round of clays, as well as driven and walked-up game days, shooting for gundog trials and the occasional stalking trip to Northumberland. I also undertake pest control duties on a couple of local farms.

Having immersed myself in the worlds of publishing and public affairs for some 40 years, I now spend more time on my twin passions of wildlife watching and shooting. Contrary to public prejudice, the two pastimes are not only compatible but highly complementary. When shooting works hand in hand with conservation, we create a virtuous circle that benefits mankind and nature.

As a member of the BASC Council, I believe my professional experience would benefit the association in its messaging and campaign strategy to win hearts and minds. We must be relentless in persuading politicians and public opinion of the social, economic and environmental benefits of shooting and eating game.

I was a Sunday Times staff reporter, Yorkshire Post deputy editor and editor of two regional daily newspapers before working in Brussels as head of media for British MEPs. Then, I formed my own consultancy, Furbisher Media Ltd.

So I know how journalists and politicians operate and how shooting enthusiasts think, too. I also understand the motivation of organisations such as RSPB and the Wildlife Trusts, though I frequently disagree deeply with their priorities and tactics.

Helping these disparate groups understand one another better while making sure the interests of shooting are heard and understood, could play long-term dividends for our members and for nature.

My three priorities as a council member would be working constantly to improve the public’s understanding and appreciation of shooting’s benefits; ensuring that our sport continues to become more accessible to all, regardless of background; and encouraging the association’s staff and officers to anticipate and minimise potential threats to the countryside and our way of life.

As a real-world pragmatist, I would encourage reasonable change before the unreasonable is forced upon us. As the voice, eyes and ears of members, I would work tirelessly on their behalf. With that goal, I seek your support and thank those who respond.
