Insurances

BASC insurance is a relationship that you can trust, providing a specially tailored insurance package for shooters at great value. Our insurance is well-known and widely accepted, including overseas.

Please note that there are differences in insurance cover for airgun, gundogs and supporter levels.

Brokers: Marsh Ltd, Underwriter: Zurich

The policies cover recreational activities of wildfowling, rabbit, pigeon, game, deer, vermin and target shooting, air-gunning, conservation, hawking, archery, angling and ferreting.

As a BASC member you automatically receive the following insurance package:

  • up to £10 million Public Liability Cover
  • up to £10 million Employer Liability Cover
  • up to £10 million Product Liability cover

The policies provide worldwide cover (excluding North America and Canada) with a limitation of 90 days to cover holidays for members residing permanently in Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man.

Brokers: Marsh Ltd, Underwriter: Chubb

Up to £50,000 cover for:

Personal accidents resulting in the loss of sight, hearing, or limbs while engaged in the recreational activities of wildfowling, rabbit, pigeon, game, deer, vermin and target shooting, air-gunning, conservation, hawking, archery, angling and ferreting.

The BASC policy only covers recreational activities. However, we recognise that some members will take a small payment in cash or in kind as a result of their recreational activity. In most cases this payment will barely cover expenses; nevertheless it is important that members are clear on when the BASC policy will protect them and if they need additional cover.

BASC insurance policies cover members who make a small commercial gain from the sale of meat or other small income derived from such recreational shooting activities, providing this is not their primary source of income.

However, if you are formally engaged by a commercial shoot to attend on specific days to undertake a specific task such as beating, picking up or loading, then you will be employed by the shoot and covered under the shoot’s Employer Liability cover.

If you hire yourself out as a loader, coach, pest controller, stalker/deer manager etc., BASC can introduce you to additional cover needed for this commercial activity. Click here for more information.

All BASC members, regardless of the level of membership (excluding supporters), are covered under the Association’s group liability insurance policy as part of their membership for the humane dispatch of animals, within the normal course of their recreational shooting.

In addition, members who are approved by authorities such as the police, RSPCA or the Forestry Commission to carry out humane dispatch can benefit from the liability cover if they are called out by such an authority to carry out a legal dispatch.

The policy does not cover the humane dispatch of owned farm stock or domestic animals.

Campaigns, lobbying and representation

Being a BASC member funds political lobbying and campaigns that aim to deliver:
  • A guaranteed future for sustainable shooting sports.
  • All party-political consensus in support of sustainable sports.
  • Promotion of the conservation benefits of shooting.
Achieving all three of these is fundamentally important to ensure that you can still go shooting. BASC will campaign to ensure that shooting is seen as a benefit to the community through education, the promotion of scientific research, best practice in firearms licensing, habitat conservation, and wildlife and game management. What we do with your membership

On behalf of members, BASC invests in several initiatives to reinforce the message of shooting as a sustainable sport.

  • British Game Alliance – BASC provides a substantial support package to the BGA which includes financial backing, access to BASC staff expertise and a BASC Council member to sit on the BGA board. Read more here.
  • Gamekeepers Welfare Trust – BASC and GCT formed the Trust in 1992. It offers support, financial grants, housing and employment help for gamekeepers, stalkers and ghillies and their dependants.
  • Taste of Game – Set up by BASC, Taste of Game is subsidised through legacy funding. It aims to raise the profile of game meat in the UK and educate people. One initiative that has been set up is the Game Changer.
  • Young Shots – Encouraging the next generation of shooters is vital to keep the sport going for years to come. BASC promotes shooting to young people through events, game fairs, training, reduced membership, competitions and opportunities to tell their story as a Young Shot journalist.
