The BASC Wales 2010 world .410 clay shooting competition was decided by the final pair in a shoot-off between last year’s champion, Tim Smith, from Worcestershire, and challenger Les Taylor from West Yorkshire after both scored 41 out of a possible 50. Mr. Taylor held his nerve to shoot both targets of his last pair to take the title by one point.
The event was held at the Mid Wales Shooting centre near Caersws in Powys. The course, designed by Jonathan Williams, was set with fifty sporting targets over five stands. The .410 is the smallest of the popular shotgun gauges, firing a light charge of pellets, and would normally be used as an entry-level gun for young people and for close-quarter pest control.
All of the 2009 winners returned to Wales to defend their championships. Last year’s junior winner Connor Gorsuch, from Hampshire, was beaten into second place by William Allen from Oxfordshire, who shot a score of 36.
Katie Cowell from Wrexham successfully retained her Ladies’ title with a score of 28, rounding off a year where she gained her first “cap” for shooting in the Welsh International skeet team.
