The provision will extend the life of your certificate where an application is made for the renewal of a certificate at least eight weeks before it is due to expire but the police are unable to renew it before the certificate expires. The extension is not automatic. Those who will benefit from the extension will receive a letter of confirmation from their police force. In the event that a renewal cannot be issued before the extended certificate period, you should ask for a temporary permit under section 7 of the Firearms Act 1968 authorising your continued possession of firearms and ammunition.The provision does not apply in relation to the renewal of a certificate granted or last renewed in Northern Ireland.
