Strong growth in shotgun and firearms ownership

There has been a surge in new shotgun and firearm certificates issued by the police, according to an analysis of latest figures from the Home Office by the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). The figures, which relate to 2008/2009, show the highest year-on-year rises in certificates on issue for both shotguns and firearms since records began in 1968.

Somerset gamekeeper takes top trophy at Crufts 2010

A gamekeeper and his dog from Wellington in Somerset have taken the top honours in the gamekeepers? classes at Crufts 2010. Melvyn Hobbs and his English Springer Spaniel Whitebrook Lord of the Rings, also known as Moley, won the Northesk memorial trophy.

BASC launches Buy British game campaign

A campaign to support British game rearers has been launched by the UK?s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC). It aims to encourage all gamekeepers, shoot owners and shoot managers to source their eggs and young birds from local producers who use traditional methods and high welfare standards.

Police demand for BASC guidance soars

Thousands of extra copies of a police officer?s guide to lawful shooting have been printed to meet demand from police forces around the country. The guide, produced by the UK?s largest shooting organisation, the British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC), provides officers with information on situations where people will be involved in activities such as game shooting, deer stalking, wildfowling, pest control and target shooting.

Proposed gamebird tax shelved

Proposals which could have seen a financial levy placed on gamebirds have been shelved after BASC called for them to be abandoned. The tax was designed to help cover the costs of a new body to fight major disease outbreaks such as avian flu.
