Senedd committee urged to review shooting’s important contribution

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation (BASC) has responded to the Senedd Economy, Trade, and Rural Affairs Committee consultation, asking for an enquiry to be undertaken into the contribution shooting makes to the Welsh economy.

BASC has asked that the enquiry also considers the Welsh Government’s policy towards shooting, following recent correspondence from the Economy Minister indicating that the Welsh Government policy does not support sustainable shooting. 

Bronwen Gardner, BASC public affairs manager Wales, said: “Shooting activities in Wales contribute £75 million to the Welsh economy, supporting 2,900 shooting-related businesses across the country and directly supporting the equivalent of 2,400 full-time jobs.

“Shooting businesses provide a wide range of positive contributions that are very often overlooked, including conservation activities and both physical and mental health benefits.

“This is a key Senedd committee for our sector and an enquiry would gather the available evidence and showcase to Welsh Government the important contribution delivered by shooters and shooting businesses across the country.

“Increased understanding is needed by decision makers to ensure that policy decisions are based on evidence and that all aspects of our industry are understood.”

BASC will also be responding to the Senedd Climate Change, Environment, and Infrastructure Committee consultation seeking views on their priorities.
